How to Choose a Small Electric Forklift

A practical 7-step checklist for choosing the right small electric forklift: capacity, lift height, aisle width, battery type, duty cycle, tires and after-sales support.

1. Start With Your Heaviest Regular Load

Rated capacity is the maximum weight the truck can lift at its rated load center - typically referenced to a standard 500 mm point for counterbalance trucks. Choose a capacity that covers your heaviest regular pallet with a 20-30% margin - not your average load. If most pallets are 800 kg but a few hit 1,300 kg, you need a 1.5 ton truck, not a 1 ton.

Remember that attachments, longer load centers and high lift heights all reduce effective capacity. If your loads are long or oddly shaped, tell the supplier your actual load center in the RFQ.

2. Match Lift Height to Your Top Beam

Measure your highest racking level and add fork clearance - that is your required lift height. Small electric forklifts typically offer 3,000 mm standard with higher options. Buying more mast than you need adds cost and can reduce residual capacity, so match it to your warehouse.

Also check the lowered mast height against your doorways and any mezzanine floors. Exact lowered mast height is confirmed during quotation.

3. Measure Your Aisles Before Anything Else

The forklift's turning circle determines whether it can stack in your aisles. Compact models turn tighter than standard trucks. As a planning rule, your aisle needs to accommodate the turning circle plus load length plus working clearance.

Send your aisle width, pallet size and racking layout with your RFQ. A good supplier will verify fit before quoting - this single check prevents the most expensive mistake in forklift buying.

4. Choose Battery by Shift Pattern

Single shift, daytime charging: lead-acid is the economical choice. Two or more shifts, or hot tropical climates: lithium pays for itself through fast charging, opportunity charging and low maintenance.

Working time per charge depends on the battery specification and duty cycle, and is confirmed during quotation. If your operation runs longer, lithium with break-time top-ups is the practical answer.

5. Check Gradeability and Floor Conditions

If you have ramps, dock plates or yard work, check loaded gradeability for the model you choose - confirmed during quotation. Solid tires suit concrete floors and smooth yards; tell your supplier if you have rough or unpaved areas.

6. Plan for Parts and Support

Ask what wearing parts to stock (forks, tires, contactors, filters), what the warranty covers (confirmed during quotation) and how parts are shipped to your country. A small parts package ordered with the truck saves weeks of downtime later.

7. Get a Specification Sheet Before You Pay

Never buy on photos alone. Request the full specification sheet for the exact configuration quoted - capacity, lift height, battery, mast, dimensions - and confirm every field that matters to your operation in writing.
